MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE PT960BMBB
PT960BMBB is a 30-inch GE Profile double-convection wall oven with two 4.4-cubic-foot cavities, proximity-waking LCD controls and a documented F function-error pattern.
Identify the double-convection PT960
PT960BMBB is the GE Profile built-in 30-inch double convection wall oven. Both its upper and lower cavities hold 4.4 cubic feet and use convection, unlike the PT956 sibling whose lower cavity is traditional. GE lists three heavy-duty self-clean racks for each oven, but seven support positions above and six below. Those numbers affect placement when a recipe calls for multiple sheets. The official multilingual owner-manual cover identifies PT960 as the double-wall family; the full BMBB product title and serial label establish the particular black unit for parts and service. Hidden bake elements are listed for the exact model, so pans belong on racks rather than directly on the oven floor. The two matching doors should not obscure which chamber a symptom belongs to. Write down upper or lower, the active mode and the displayed text before clearing a message. The product's exact specifications also distinguish an upper-only temperature probe and upper Auto Recipe Conversion from the shared convection capability.
Navigate its proximity touch interface
The control is a glass-touch LCD with a proximity sensor, not a row of only mechanical buttons. The page 5 diagram shows a home screen, recipe controls, Bake, Broil, Convection Bake and Convection Roast, along with touch pads for HELP and OPTIONS. When idle for ten minutes, the display darkens; a touch or even an approaching hand can wake it. Light or nearby movement may cause the same wake-up, which page 44 discusses as normal. For cooking, choose UPPER OVEN or LOWER OVEN on the screen before entering temperature and pressing START. Convection Bake offers SINGLE RACK and MULTI-RACK choices, with space around pans for airflow. The exact GE record reserves the food probe and automatic recipe conversion for the upper oven, despite a shared manual that sometimes phrases probe directions broadly. Do not assume a lower probe outlet from a generic screen prompt. A dark screen that wakes normally is not equivalent to a function code; a completely blank display that stays blank requires a separate power and settings check.
Schedule and clean the correct cavity
Self-cleaning is another screen-driven operation. The guide asks for the intended UPPER OVEN or LOWER OVEN after SELF CLEAN, then offers LIGHT CLEAN for three hours, REGULAR CLEAN for five, and CUSTOM from three hours through seven hours thirty minutes. This timing range is materially different from older five-hour maximum models. Remove probe, broiler equipment, cookware and foil before cleaning. The self-clean racks supplied for this product can remain if the manual's conditions are followed. The guide permits timed baking in one cavity while the other cleans, and it queues the second clean if both are requested; a delayed start is therefore not automatically a fault. Once a cycle runs, the door cannot open until temperature falls below the lock threshold and OVEN LOCKED disappears. A plugged-in probe or Sabbath setting can stop the clean function. Record which oven and which Light, Regular or Custom choice was made before assuming a failed latch or display.
Separate an F error from screen behavior
On page 5, flashing F with a number or letter and an oven-control signal is identified as a function error. Page 44 repeats the remedy: CLEAR/OFF, one hour of cooling and a new attempt. If F comes back, disconnect all oven power for at least thirty seconds, reconnect and call for service if it returns. Note every character and whether upper or lower convection, broil or cleaning was in progress. The manual does not decode each suffix into a failed sensor or board. The same troubleshooting page explains that a touch screen waking by itself can simply be responding to proximity or light, not a control failure. Power loss may make the clock flash and require resetting programmed functions. By distinguishing an intentional wake, an unresponsive blank screen, a locked clean door and an actual F pattern, a service report can target the right cavity and avoid confusing routine interface behavior with a diagnostic message.
Verified model details
Both ovens use convection and have three self-clean racks, while the probe and recipe conversion are upper-only.
