MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE PEB1590SMSS
GE PEB1590SMSS is a countertop microwave/convection oven with a distinct cooking shelf, sensor programs and two documented control states.
Identify a countertop oven with optional built-in trim
PEB1590SMSS is a stainless GE Profile countertop convection/microwave, not a range-hood unit. Its exact GE listing specifies a 1.5-cubic-foot cavity, 1,000-watt microwave output and 12.75-inch recessed glass turntable. The linked owner PDF names the PEB1590 family, but its optional built-in kit table lists other model suffixes and never names SMSS. Do not infer a compatible trim kit from that family table; the exact product page identifies this appliance as countertop. Nor should vent-fan directions from a similarly named over-range model be applied here. The manual illustration shows a selector dial, control panel, turntable and separate shelf. It labels that shelf for convection or combination cooking and forbids it during plain microwaving. This distinction affects both heating results and safe cookware choice; knowing which mode and which accessory were in the cavity is the first useful fact in any service description.
Keep the shelf and cookware matched to mode
Convection mode on PEB1590SMSS circulates heated air from a selectable 225°F to 450°F. The guide requires its shelf for good circulation and even browning and describes preheated and non-preheated paths. Combination mode adds microwave energy to the hot-air process; although it also normally uses the shelf, its cookware rules are different. The source matrix accepts metal pans for convection, but not for microwave or combination operation. Glass or glass-ceramic is the flexible choice across all three listed modes, while heat-resistant microwave plastic is only conditionally suited to the hot combined process. This mode distinction also explains a display later showing CAUTION—OVEN HOT. After high-temperature convection or combination use, a sensor pad pressed while the cavity remains above 200°F will be unavailable until cooling. The manual calls that state normal, rather than a failed sensor. Let the oven cool before testing sensor Reheat or Popcorn.
Distinguish deliberate lock from heat protection
The second documented display state is CONTROL LOCKED. GE lists Child Lock for this exact SKU, and the owner guide says those words appear briefly when a button or the selector dial is used with Control Lock-Out active. Hold OFF/CLEAR for approximately three seconds to unlock. A panel that still refuses to start after unlocking should be checked against the guide's separate door, power and START rows; the short lock text does not by itself condemn a control board. The manual also describes a minute timer that may run independently of cooking and an idle clock that Display On/Off can hide. A timer countdown or dark idle clock therefore needs a different interpretation from CONTROL LOCKED. Likewise, the hot-cavity message is not released by unlocking; temperature and lock are independent causes of an unavailable function. Recording the exact text, prior convection use and whether the dial responds will localize the issue.
Use steam-sensing programs without inventing a code
PEB1590SMSS has exact-product sensor Popcorn, Reheat and Cook programs. The manual explains that Reheat waits for detected steam before showing the remaining countdown, and it warns that opening early lets that steam escape. During Popcorn, opening the door while POPCORN is displayed produces an error message; the PDF does not spell out its precise characters. It says to close the door, press OFF/CLEAR and begin again. Popcorn package size matters, so the guide directs owners to Time Cook for bags outside its specified range. After any sensor cycle, use Time Cook if food still needs heat instead of running the same sensor feature twice on one portion; GE warns that repetition can overcook or burn it. A short beep as a cycle ends or a timer expires is not proof of a sensor fault. The documented steps and observed display are more useful than attributing an invented number to the unspecified Popcorn message.
