MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JSS28WKWW
JSS28WKWW is a white 30-inch GE slide-in electric range with plug-in coils, lift-up porcelain top, standard-clean oven and an F function-error display.
Identify the white coil-top JSS28
JSS28WKWW is GE's white 30-inch slide-in electric range with a standard-clean oven. The exact GE product record names four plug-in Calrod coils set into a lift-up white porcelain-enamel cooktop, a large clear-view oven window and a removable white full-width storage drawer. Its linked PDF cover identifies the JSS28 family, and the model and serial label is behind the drawer at the front of the range frame. Copy the complete WKWW suffix before matching a coil, drawer or control. This cooktop construction differs from a smooth glass radiant range: its elements can be unplugged and sit above separate drip pans. The standard-clean oven is also an important identifying fact. Instructions for a self-clean lock, steam-clean setting or convection fan from another GE range should not be imposed on JSS28. If an owner sees an oven display message and also has a cold surface element, describe those as two observations until the manual supports a shared cause.
Separate oven operation from surface heating
The oven uses traditional heat with electronic BAKE/TEMP RECALL, START/ON, BROIL HI/LO and CLEAR/OFF pads. The display shows PRE while it warms and the set temperature after the preheat beep. That normal word and signal should not be mistaken for an error. GE lists an audible preheat cue and an electronic clock and kitchen timer; the timer measures elapsed time but does not run the oven. The owner's guide says to keep the door closed while broiling, with HI and LO choices for different foods. Above the oven, each surface unit is controlled by a push-turn knob; an ON light glows when any element is energized. One coil that fails to heat does not necessarily mean the central oven board has an F fault. The troubleshooting chart instead asks whether the element is fully seated in its receptacle, its control is set correctly and the drip pan lies properly in its recess. Make those observations with controls off and the surface cool.
Care for the lift-up porcelain top
The lift-up porcelain top needs its own cleaning sequence. Page 17 says a coil must be cool and OFF before removing it to reach the drip pan. Move the element back toward its receptacle, lift it only about an inch and pull it out; lifting too high repeatedly can damage the receptacle or keep the coil from sitting flat later. Refit the pan with its opening aligned to the connector and insert the element terminals before pushing the coil down to lock. Do not immerse surface elements in liquid. The oven vents through an opening under the left rear coil, so leave that path free even if moisture appears nearby during oven use. For interior dirt, follow the ordinary cleaning directions for a standard-clean oven; there is no JSS28 self-clean cycle to activate. The drawer may be removed for access underneath, but should be returned to its guides without trapping the power cord behind it.
Read the oven's F display correctly
On physical PDF page 6, flashing F plus a number or letter with an oven-control signal is explicitly a function error. Press CLEAR/OFF, leave the oven to cool for one hour and then try it again. If the same pattern returns, the manual says to disconnect power to the range and call for service; it supplies no code-to-component table and no duration for this particular power disconnect. Write down the exact number or letter, whether baking or broiling was active and whether the display had first shown PRE. A flashing time following a household outage is described separately and calls for resetting the clock. Because this exact oven is standard-clean, do not apply the door-latch troubleshooting written for another family's self-clean cycle. Similarly, a surface-unit ON lamp relates to its knob and heater, not the oven's F characters. Keeping the indications distinct helps a technician decide where to investigate rather than replacing parts based on an unsupported code interpretation.
