MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JES1656SRSS

GE JES1656SRSS is a 1.6-cu-ft stainless countertop microwave whose exact JES1656 panel has sensor Reheat and a documented lock indicator.

Read the JES1656 panel, not its sibling

JES1656SRSS is the stainless GE countertop variant with a 1.60-cubic-foot cavity, 1150 IEC-705 output watts and a 13.625-inch glass turntable. The exact product page links a 40-page owner guide naming both JES1651 and JES1656 on its cover. That shared title does not make the two keypads interchangeable. Page eight draws JES1656 on the left, where a REHEAT pad sits below Potato; the JES1651 drawing on the right puts Soften/Melt there instead. GE's exact JES1656SRSS fields independently list Reheat, Popcorn, Beverage, Potato and Vegetables sensor controls. Use the left diagram when locating keys or following a sequence. The appliance also lists Time Cook I and II, Weight and Time Defrost, Start/Pause and a timer. The control match between the exact SKU and labeled drawing establishes which instructions in the family guide apply to this stainless 1.6-cubic-foot model.

Choose a Reheat code and finish safely

Reheat is the distinguishing sensor program for this panel. On page twelve, pressing REHEAT asks for one of three food codes: pasta at four to sixteen ounces, fruit or vegetables at four to sixteen, or a dinner plate at eight to twenty-four. The oven starts after the code is entered. Humidity-based controls adjust as moisture rises, so the result depends on food type, container and venting as well as the number selected. Cover food as directed and let steam escape safely. The manual expressly says not to run a sensor feature twice in succession on the same portion. If the first countdown leaves a cold center, use Time Cook for the extra minutes instead of repeating Reheat; a second sensor pass may no longer read the original moisture change reliably. Reheat food code three is a dinner plate, not a fault code. This exact variant's panel does not have the other sibling's Soften/Melt pad, so butter or chocolate directions from that section should not be presented as a JES1656 shortcut.

Use the other sensor keys within their ranges

The remaining sensor keys also have defined amounts. POPCORN is for prepared microwave bags of 3.0 to 3.5 ounces; a smaller or larger packet calls for Time Cook and its package directions. BEVERAGE starts an eight-ounce drink automatically, which may leave the container hotter than it appears. POTATO takes one through four pieces of roughly six to eight ounces each. VEGETABLE asks for a code that distinguishes fresh, frozen or canned produce, with the serving or ounce range in the printed table. These choices should be entered before treating a display as an error. The manual repeats the same no-immediate-repeat rule for sensor programs. A lid that traps all steam, an uncovered food that dries quickly or a portion outside the printed range can change how humidity is detected. Follow the food-specific arrangement, then add manual time if the center needs more heat. No component-level SENSOR ERROR code is assigned to this exact model in the cited pages.

Interpret lock, pause and timer states

The verified display signal is the lock indicator described on page fifteen. Hold the panel's CLEAR/OFF key for about three seconds to engage or release Control Lock-Out; the indicator lights while the controls are locked. This is a deliberate control state rather than a failed-part diagnosis. The exact JES1656 panel drawing visibly labels CLEAR/OFF, and its product fields list Control Lock. The troubleshooting table on page eighteen uses the different wording PAUSE/CLEAR for unlocking, even though the panel and primary instruction say CLEAR/OFF. Use the actual key shown for this variant. START/PAUSE has another job: one press stops a cooking cycle without opening the door or clearing the display, and another resumes it. TIMER counts without microwave energy and can create a holding interval after defrost. Thus a lit display with no heating may reflect a lock, a pause or a timer, each requiring a different response.

Cook or defrost manually when sensors do not fit

Manual controls provide a route when sensor conditions do not match the food. TIME COOK accepts a chosen duration up to 99 minutes and 99 seconds; POWER LEVEL can reduce the energy duty cycle from HI. Level seven supplies microwave energy about seventy percent of the time, while level three supplies it about thirty percent. EXPRESS COOK digits one through six start that many full-power minutes, and ADD 30 SEC starts or extends a short interval. TIME DEFROST uses a selected duration and asks the user to turn food halfway; Weight Defrost takes pounds for meat, poultry or fish and signals when pieces should be turned. The guide allows a Time Cook step to follow defrost automatically, which still requires checking the food before serving. For stainless care, unplug the unit, wash the cooled turntable with its support and wipe the case with mild detergent in the direction of the grain. Keep the door-contact surface clean and replace both rotating parts before cooking.
