MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JES1651SRSS
JES1651SRSS is the stainless GE 1.6-cu-ft sensor microwave whose exact JES1651 panel shows a lock indicator, sensor Popcorn/Beverage/Potato/Vegetable and distinct timed cooking controls.
Use the JES1651 panel rather than the JES1656 variant
GE JES1651SRSS is a stainless countertop microwave with a 1.60-cubic-foot cavity, 1,150 IEC-705 output watts and a 13.5625-inch glass turntable. The exact GE page links an owner manual whose cover names JES1651 and JES1656. Page eight draws those two control panels separately: use the panel labeled JES1651 on the right, with its sensor Popcorn, Beverage, Vegetable and Potato keys, Clear Off and Start Pause. The exact product independently lists those four sensor selections, electronic touch control and Control Lock. A significant source mismatch concerns Reheat: the product specification lists it, but the JES1651 drawing places Soften/Melt where the JES1656 drawing has Reheat. This article does not assign either disputed program to the exact unit. Read the physical key labels before following an optional feature page from the family guide.
Interpret the lit control-lock indicator
A lit lock symbol on this model is a status indicator, not a numeric failure code. Page fifteen explains that holding CLEAR/OFF for about three seconds engages or releases Control Lock; it says the lock indicator stays illuminated while the panel is locked. The JES1651 diagram actually labels the key Clear Off, and the exact product page includes Control Lock. The troubleshooting table on page eighteen uses the different name PAUSE/CLEAR for its unlock instruction, even though no such combined key appears in the JES1651 drawing. Follow the direct operating instructions and the labeled control rather than guessing at an absent button. After the lamp goes out, make sure the door is securely shut and press START after selecting a cooking program. The same troubleshooting page separates a lit control panel that will not start from a tripped circuit, loose plug or power surge.
Cook with confirmed sensor choices
The confirmed sensor choices have different assumptions. Popcorn is described for prepackaged 3.0–3.5-ounce bags; Beverage starts immediately for an eight-ounce drink and warns that the result may be very hot. Potato asks for one to four pieces of about six to eight ounces each. Vegetable uses a small food code table to distinguish fresh, frozen and canned vegetables, so those numbers are menu selections rather than alerts. The manual repeatedly warns against running a sensor feature twice in succession on the same food portion. If the first cycle leaves it undercooked, use Time Cook for additional minutes instead of simply triggering the sensor key again. On the exact panel, these keys sit together under Sensor, while the two-family booklet also prints optional Reheat instructions. Because the actual JES1651 drawing disagrees with GE's Reheat product field, do not rely on that optional instruction for JES1651SRSS.
Choose time and power deliberately
For a known cooking duration, Time Cook requests minutes and seconds, then START; page ten allows a selected defrost cycle to lead into a timed cook automatically. GE specifies ten power levels. The manual explains that level seven cycles microwave energy for roughly seventy percent of the time, leaving pauses for heat to spread through food. Express Cook pads one through six begin an equal number of minutes at power level ten; the power can be changed while the countdown proceeds. Add 30 Sec starts immediately and extends the running countdown by another thirty seconds with each press, up to the guide's maximum time. These are different from a sensor cycle, where repeated runs on the same portion are discouraged. The Start/Pause key can interrupt cooking without opening the door or clearing the display, then resume it. Pick one path from the JES1651 drawing based on portion and desired control, rather than treating every number as a fault display.
Check defrost, rotation and surface care
GE lists both automatic and timed defrost for this exact model. Page fourteen gives Auto Defrost a food-weight entry up to six pounds for meat, poultry and fish; the guide tells the user to turn the food when prompted and allow standing time afterward. Time Defrost instead uses a chosen duration and page eleven calls for turning food halfway through. If a result is uneven, ensure the glass turntable and its support are seated and able to rotate; page seven says both must be present during operation. An illuminated panel with no cooking also warrants checking the door latch and pressing START after the selection, as page eighteen notes. For the stainless finish, page seventeen warns against steel wool and recommends gentle wiping rather than abrasive tools. These physical and programming checks address common symptoms without inventing a sensor error code that the exact owner guide does not define.
