MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE GSD5940FSS
GE GSD5940FSS is a stainless dishwasher with a black panel, ExtraClean sensor and six status lights. Its linked GSD5940 manual documents four useful indicator patterns.
Verify the stainless and black-panel version
GE's exact GSD5940FSS page describes a stainless built-in dishwasher with a black control panel, twenty-four-inch overall width and eleven electronic touchpads. It lists an ExtraClean sensor and six cycle-progress indicators. The official PDF linked from that page includes GSD5940 on its cover, although it does not print the complete FSS sales suffix. Its family panel drawing uses Clean Sensor terminology and shows several load keys; the sales page names Normal, Rinse Only, Pots & Pans and China/Crystal, and marks the number of cycles as variable. It would be inaccurate to infer every key on the shared drawing for this particular stainless unit. Check the installed labels, then use the six status indicators to locate the relevant diagnostic row. The black-panel detail comes from the exact model record, not from a generic brochure photograph.
Place cycles and options in their proper scope
The exact SKU offers Hi-Temp Rinse, Power Pre-Soak and two-, four- or eight-hour delayed start. On the family page, China Crystal is assigned 6.6 gallons and about 34 minutes, illustrating why the chosen load type affects both water and elapsed time. The family instructions say Power Presoak must be selected before a cycle and adds sixteen minutes. They say Speed Dry adds twenty-three minutes to Normal, but the exact SKU page does not use that Speed Dry label, so read the installed control before applying it. A Sanitized word in the status column is also conditional: the manual explains that inadequate heating or interruption can keep that light off. That alone is not one of the flashing Control Error patterns. Record which cycle and options were selected when comparing an observed duration to a manual chart.
Respond to the documented status lights
The official page-eleven table gives four observations. Sensing absent in the first part of Normal or Pots & Pans is called CleanSensor Error; the machine can continue without that sensor, but service is advised. Washing flashing after Start/Reset means the expected pump-out and reset, taking up to ninety seconds. Rinsing flashing with beeps is Control Error: press Start/Reset to stop the sound, switch the circuit breaker off for ten seconds, restore power and seek service if the light persists. Drying flashing with beeps is Control or Sequence Switch Error; Start/Reset should attempt a reset, followed by another wash and service if the fault remains. The two beeping rows are therefore different despite sharing the status column. None of them is a numeric display code; preserve the actual lamp name and sound in a service note.
Use rack layout to protect wash performance
This variant also has a distinctive rack arrangement that can explain unsatisfactory cleaning. GE specifies four fold-down tines below, two above, a Stem Safe upper utility shelf and a large silverware basket with two covers. Fold the right tines only as needed for cookware, then check that no long handle stops a spray arm. The manual warns that a large platter in the front-right lower corner can block detergent circulation. A poor result after overloading is a loading question before it becomes evidence of an electronic fault. The exact page also lists QuietPower 3, an active vent and a 725-watt Calrod heater; these identify the equipment but do not change the meaning of Rinsing or Drying flashes. Compare the visible rack and panel to the official product specifications before ordering parts or following a family-only illustration.
